Our Taekwondo belt system in its progression from white to black represents the cycle of the seasons.
Each color stands for a specific stage of achievement. In this way we realize an essential concept of
oriental Philosophy, that which is born must grow, reach maturity, die and leave behind the seeds of new birth.
White Belt
10th Gup: Beginner’s belt color. White represents a primitive stage of achievement
White signifies innocence and purity. Thus the seed as it lies dormant beneath the
snows of winter.
Gold Belt
8th Gup: Gold represents the new growth, which appears in spring. Our Martial
art starts to reveal itself.
Green Belt
6th Gup: Green represents the speedy development of youth as summer arrives.
Green Belt Brown Tip
5th Gup: Reinforcement of what has been learned to date.
Brown Belt
4th Gup: Brown Signifies the mountains and the earth, it represents power, stability,
agility, weight and wisdom. This is a stabilizing stage, both mentally and physically,
analogous to the plants which curtail their growth and prepare to flower in the late summer.
Brown Belt Red Tip
3rd Gup: Reinforcement of what has been learned to date. As well as prepareing for 2nd Gup
Red Belt
2nd Gup: Red represents blood, life, energy, attention, and control. The student’s power
and techniques begin to bloom and ripen.
Dark Blue
1st Gup: Dark blue represents maturity, respect, and honor. Our dark blue belt is given to
the Cho Dan Bo ( Black Belt Candidate). He/She must now prepare mind and body for the final step
needed to attain black belt.
Black Belt
1st Dan: Black-the end of one stage and the beginning of the next. The color represents maturity,
calmness, dignity and sincerity. The black belt will eventually whiten with age showing the full cycle
of training and life.
